Experiments on gaps in spectral graphs and why glass is see-through
The spectrum of Schrodinger operators with a periodic potential term is known to have gaps. Less well-known is the fact that spectral gaps can persist when the potential is random. I will discuss experimental results on a disordered optical system that is governed by the time-dependent Schrodinger equation, and show how the spectral gaps manifest themselves in terms of localized states. I'll show that in a certain limit, the problem maps onto finding the spectra of random graphs.
