On March 31, Nobel Prize-winning economist Robert Engle will put the causes of the financial crisis under the microscope in his talk, “Global Financial Stability and Long-Run Risks,” the first of the 2010 Speakers on the Square lecture series.

The lecture presents an opportunity for members of the NYU community to hear a leading thinker discuss a range of risks facing society, from financial instability to war, terrorism and global economic over-heating. He will also discuss the regulatory reforms that are being proposed to solve the financial crisis.

According to Engle, "The time has come to finalize financial reform legislation, so that the important process of coordinating with global regulators can be implemented."

Currently the Michael Armellino Professor of Finance at NYU’s Stern School of Business, Engle is an innovative economist with an impressive portfolio of work, including over 100 academic journal articles.  He frequently acts as a speaker and consultant for financial institutions.

Associate Professor Petter Kolm, Deputy Director of the mathematics in finance MS program at NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, says that Engle’s discussion of risk is at the cutting edge of contemporary economics.  “Professor Engle’s work in measuring and understanding risks at both the institutional and the systemic levels is groundbreaking.”

Kolm notes that one of the challenges facing society is to better grasp and address global risks beyond those posed by the financial markets.  Risk management is an integral part of the education that Courant students receive in the mathematics in finance master’s program, currently in its 10th year.

The Speakers on the Square Lecture Series was established in 2005 by the New York University Alumni Association to create opportunities to welcome alumni back to Washington Square. The talks feature some of NYU's most distinguished faculty and alumni, and focus on innovative research and topical issues.  Past lectures have included news anchor, alumna, and NYU Trustee Maria Bartiromo (WSC '89) on managing businesses in uncertain times; broadcast journalist and NYU alumnus Ray Suarez (WSC '78) on the intersection of politics and religion in America; and NYU Professor Joseph LeDoux exploring the brain mechanisms that cause fear and anxiety, among others.

Professor Engle’s lecture is from 6:00-7:00 PM on Wednesday, March 31 at Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square South. The talk will be followed by a reception.  To RSVP, please respond online at alumni.nyu.edu/speakers or call 212-992-7614 by March 26.
